Buying jewelry is not always as easy as it seems. It can be spontaneous, well-documented or to commemorate a special occasion. The right jewelry can make a birthday or anniversary much more special. Of course, the holidays are when jewelry shopping goes into overdrive!
Those of us who have a really hard time choosing jewellery that says "I love you", "Happy Birthday" or "Merry Christmas" may need help. There are so many choices - rings, earrings, necklaces and even charms and pendants. Your jewellery purchase says a lot about you and the person you give it to.
To learn how to buy the perfect jewellery, we've put together eight of the most practical and affordable tips.
1. BRAND LOYALTY
We know that some of the biggest brands of jewellery are also among the most sought-after, but are they really worth the price?
Are Swarovski crystals really much better than the nameless variety? Well, they are. Are branded plastic beads better than all other plastic beads? Probably not.
If you can't find specific details in the crafting in addition to a name stamp, then you might be paying too much.
Traditional luxury brands don't often hand over their jewelry, which makes them bad choices for holiday gifts. Knowing when and where to buy jewelry can save you hundreds of dollars in gifts.
2. MONEY IS TIMELESS
Sometimes our love for anything gold can overshadow beautiful silver jewellery. Gold can often dominate certain gemstones and make it difficult to define certain cuts. Silver offers a stronger contrast to topaz, ruby, pearls, amber, marcasite and many others.
Sterling silver is also less maintenance and very solid. Compare two identical rings, one in 24-karat gold and one in sterling silver. The difference in price is obvious, but beauty can favour silver.
3. PEARLS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND
Diamonds are nice, of course, but pearls give you many more options. If it's not in your budget to buy your beloved a diamond necklace, think pearls. They are an iconic compliment to all styles and beauty.
Pearls are divided into three categories: natural, cultured and imitation. The natural goes to an unsuccessful effort, these are the rarest and often counterfeit pearls. Natural pearls are difficult to find in nature, especially in the size and luster we often see.
At the other end of the spectrum, imitation beads are usually made of plastic and look nothing like the real thing. Cultured pearls are grown and cultivated to produce the widest range of pearls on the market. You can find cultured pearls just about anywhere.
You can tell when you look at a pretty strand of pearls by its luster, brilliance and the softness of the surface. The cheaper pearls will have more transparent bodies, while the more expensive ones will shine like glass with low iridescence.
4. GEMSTONES / BIRTHSTONES
A good idea of jewelry gift is to get something that has the person's birthstone. Now, obviously, if you only look at ruby, sapphire or emerald, you might be delayed by the price. We recommend semi-precious stones for their rare and unique presence.
Moonstones, amber, peridot, garnet, opal, amethyst and many other stones that will impress and surprise your beloved. Watch out for synthetic gemstones, these can be an excellent alternative, but don't be tempted to lie about their authenticity. The truth is that synthetic gemstones are just as impressive as natural stones.
5. ASK FOR JEWELRY
If you need help buying jewelry, it makes sense to ask someone who makes a living to do so. The best sources of unbiased advice would be small shops, online or in a place where you don't buy. Your buying decisions should not be influenced by the same person who sells you.
Since 75% of buyers' purchases are influenced by Instagram, this is a category you should leave to the experts.
6. GET A SECOND OPINION
If you are having trouble deciding what type of jewellery your loved one might like, don't hesitate to ask a friend or family member. Taste is all subjective, so even if you can find a piece that is rare or skillfully crafted, they may not see it. Just make sure you find someone who can keep a secret!
7. FINISH THE LOOK
Have you ever bought a piece of jewelry as a gift? Find something that complements or builds on it! Matching earrings or a bracelet for the necklace you've previously given as a gift is a useful and practical addition. Most pieces sold by Roma have matching necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even pendants that make a gift in a snap!
8. CONSIDER REPAIRS OR OVERHAULS
When it's hard to find a new piece for birthdays, it can be difficult to find something that compliments your previous gifts. In this case, it may be a good idea to have an old part repaired or added. This can save you a lot of money and time in deciding on something new.
If they wear this part every day, it may be worth "ruining" the gift if the transformation is radical. It will always be technically a surprise, as they may think you are just taking the easy way out. Once they see the new level of brilliance or the added gems, for example, they will be speechless.
